Greenland 2008

Greenland, 4 – 25 July 2008

The Arctic Circle Trail – A 180 km hike from Kangerlussuaq to Sisimiut

The trail is very well marked and there are small primitive huts on the trail that you can use for free (do bring a tent in case the hut is full). There are some small waters to cross and a bigger one, called Oles Lakseelv (there is a bridge about 1,5 km south of it).  If you want to hike The Arctic Circle Trail, do not expect to get it for yourself. It is not a “highway” but you will meet other hikers (and it is always nice to exchange experience with people that are coming from the direction you are going in).  I used 8 days to get from Kangerlussuaq to Sisimiut, but I will recommend that you do it in 10 instead, no need to hurry through this beautiful landscape.

Ilulissat
Ilulissat is fare the most touristed city in Greenland that I have been to. The “tourist industry” here is very well organized (and that is not typically Greenlandic). Big cruise ships are docking here and that is one of the reasons why here are so many tourists.
But the ice fjord is really something special. Do not miss this beautiful piece of nature. The shape of the ice caps and the sound of the ice breaking is fantastic!
